Drake University

Subject to final approval by the Board of Trustees, Drake University will be launching a new interdisciplinary concentration in Global and Comparative Public Health in the spring of 2010. Students from any major will be eligible to enroll in the concentration, which carries 21 credits. The curriculum will prepare students for work or graduate study in the field of global health. The Global and Comparative Health Concentration will be administered through the Drake University Center for Global Citizenship. Faculty and curriculum development for the concentration is supported by a Title VIa grant (Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Required courses will include:

Introduction to Public Health
Global Public Health
Comparative Public Health
Health and Social Justice
Epidemiology

Electives will include courses from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, including a new course titled Spanish for Health Care Providers. Study abroad and international service learning options will also be available to students.

In addition to the Global and Comparative Public Health concentration, Drake offers majors in Health Sciences (http://www.drake.edu/cphs/programs/new_students/bshs.php), Pharmacy (http://www.drake.edu/cphs/programs/new_students/pharmd.php) and a program of undergraduate study in pre-med.
